The Laurens County Sheriff’s Office regrets to
announce that they have lost a deputy as well as a friend this morning due
to fatal single car accident. Joseph
Scott Quarles was traveling west on A.B. Jacks Road on his way to assist
fellow deputies at the Laurens Speedway when he lost control of his police
cruiser resulting in his untimely death.
Deputy Scott Quarles began his law enforcement
career with the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office on November 13, 2000 at
the age of 19. He performed
various duties from clerical to civil process and worked in the Detention
Center while waiting for his opportunity to become a certified Laurens
County Deputy Sheriff. Deputy
Quarles was certified by the SC Criminal Justice Academy as a Class I
Officer on January 25, 2002 just a few days after his 21st
birthday. He was finally
legal age to carry a pistol and had the certification to back it up.
He worked at Gray Court Owings School as a School Resource Officer
and finally went to the Uniform Patrol Division where his heart was after
his tour of the school. Scott
also volunteered his spare time by working with the youth of the
Sheriff’s Office Explorer Program as well as being a member of the
Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard and assisting in numerous community
functions such as Kid-Prints, Festivals, Career Days, Safety Fairs and
many, many more events. He
even played taps on his bugle at a 9/11 memorial for his community that he
loved so much.
Deputy Quarles will be sorely missed at the Laurens
County Sheriff’s Office and by the community he served so well.
Scott died doing what he loved most – being a deputy sheriff and
serving the public. Everyone
who knew Scott knew what the sheriff’s office, his uniform and his badge
meant to him. He was one that
took pride in the way he wore his uniform and represented himself and
Laurens County. He was a
focused man who knew what he wanted and achieved it.
A young life that achieved much and gave much.
He was a role model and hero to many.
Deputy Joseph Scott Quarles answered his final and eternal call on
Wednesday June 11, 2003 at the age of 22.
